Nolan’s first tooth

Sibling Sickness
Shoti is now 8 months old and Maddy’s turning 3 next week. And grabe this season of coughs and colds! The kids have essentially been alternating it since Sept! Maddy will pass on a virus from sch and both of them haven’t fully recovered until now. Off to see Dr Glenn today actually as Nolan’s Cimex antibiotics and Ventolin ended 10th day yday and he’s still not fully well. There’s bothersome cough here and there. Same with Maddy!!!
He still doesn’t have teeth, and yayas think that’s the reason why he’s still prone to colds and coughs.
He hates to be on the high chair, does not seem interested in food at all! Barely have any success with babyled weaning or even spoon feeding! He seems to like chewing on meet though.
Maddy’s vocabulary is expanding but this one is really hard headed. Am trying face the wall already a couple of times. I’ve hit her so hard before that I’ve caused bruising!

Nolan @ 6 Months: SOLIDS TIME
This time around, I knew I wanted to change something about feeding. Maddy subsisted on mostly jarred baby food, purees. I wanted to try baby led weaning, or at least partially. Let them get used to different textures early on, and to grasp what they want.
For Nolan's first meal, it was blended squash. He didn't seem to like it.
Actually, he hasn't like that much food so far. I've given him baked pear slices, pureed apples, he did like a bit of steamed carrot stick. He especially liked sucking on a rambutan.
Just recently bought Cerelac. So will do:
Morning: Cerelac
Lunch: Jarred baby food or purees from Healthy Options
Dinner: Baby Lead Weaning stuff like carrot sticks, potato sticks. I really should try avocado next.

The sweetest I love yous
Maddy is 2 years and 9 mos old. A few months ago, she’s started suddenly hugging you or holding your face and saying I love you Mommy. Or she’ll say I miss ya mommy. She’s super clingy and Maddy, sometimes I get caught up in how annoying it is that I forget how fleeting this Wall all be. I forget that in just maybe 10 years from now, I’ll only get a reluctant I love you out of her once prodded. I’ll have a moody teenager, who won’t want to hug me or cry for me to hold her hand or carry her.
It’s amazing how fast she learns things (I was trashing her 1-10 in hokkien!) and how fast her vocabulary is going (“I have an idea” “it’s a sunny day!”) She’s also almost fully potty trained already, except when she she’s sleeping. She can hold her pee longer especially when we’re out and we’re nowhere that near to a toilet. In school she also rarely wears a diaper anymore and tells the teacher if she wants to pee.
Shoti on the other hand is such a good natured baby and wants to sit up or stand already. He finally learned to roll over on his own just a few days after he turned 5 mos! No thanks to me after daily practice.
I was able to fly to Manila last weekend - JUST THE TWO OF US!Considering that it was the hell weekend where a NAIA 1 runway closed for 36 hours because a Xiamen airline plane that got stuck when it hard landed. Our 9am flight to Manila was moved to 1pm, which I only found out because I kept checking the site’s flight status. When I got to the airport at 12, he flight was delayed further to 2. When we got on the plane, the captain announced our flight would be at 4.40pm!!!
I survived with just my Ergo carrier! No stroller woohoo! Stayed with my parents for 3 nights, the longest I remember staying in Manila since I got married. It was a good bonding time, sayang lng the 22nd wasn’t declared a holiday like we all thought.
Also, shout out to hubby for finishing strong on the bike relay of the recent Cebu 70.3! Now it's my turn!!!
And also, Erni resigned na. Another team member gone!
(look Ma, no panty!)

Day 3 Potty Training: AMAZEBALLS RESULTS
Potty Training
Now, Maddy more or less tells us if she's going to "wiwi", even if she's wearing diapers! We only let her wear diapers if she's out of the house (for school, mall, restaurants) and when sleeping. But even if we're out and she's in diapers, she'll want to pee in the toilet and tells us ahead!
- We were just very very consistent. Pee 10min after she drinks something or after meals, again 30-45min later. And again and again every 30-40min. As in I sound like a broken record, but every half hour I'll pester her, "Wanna pee? Wanna wiwi? Wanna go to the toilet? I'll pause what you're watching, we'll be very fast."
- I made sure to sit her down on the Mellow Kids bed protector sheets when she's on the sofa, or bed. I have three now - a Medium one meant for shoti's crib, a Small blue one we use now for the sofa, and a Small yellow one I've left in Dona Rita. I've ordered more, specially a big L-Wing one for the bed when she eventually needs to learn how to pee during the night. I've ordered several more small ones for the car or stroller.
Now I have to buy more disposable toilet covers for when we go out, and my MIL wants me to buy a portable toilet too...found one in Lazada!
Back to School: Toddler Class
She's also started school. It's Day 2 today and she's back to crying when I drop her off. Teacher has to peel her away from me, literally. But she's fine naman na daw a few minutes later and calms down. I make sure she pees right when I pick her up, before we leave school. The nice thing with Discovery Camp is they have this teeny tiny toilet for kids like Maddy!
Puzzles
She's also started to enjoy putting together puzzle pieces already. She's been playing with one every night before bedtime and can put it together already on her own!
So I've bought her two more jumbo puzzles off Lazada.
Ballet
She's been enjoying ballet a lot. We had planned on just enrolling her for the summer, but we're deciding to continue her classes throughout the school year. Her recollection of the moves and what Teacher Mai teaches is amazing. She really remembers the steps. "Letter V feet!" "Pick a flower, and put it in basket!" "Rainbow hands" "Like this!"

Day 1 of Potty Training Maddy
Day 1 started midday actually. By the time I got home, she had 3 panty changes already. She also peed a little on the sofa.
I figured, a lot depends on how disciplined the yaya is too. So I told her she'd get a bonus if Maddy potty trains before November. Aba, biglang nagka sigla.
I know how being disciplined can help, because as soon as I got home, until this morning (of course she was in diapers for the night), she had no accidents. I made sure to bring her to pee 10 min after she drank water and 45min after meals. I took her every hour also regardless if she drank or ate anything.
you'd be surprised (and she was surprised herself) that she'd be able to pee in the toilet. There was one time, she was sitting there and told me, "No wiwi." Then she suddenly peed and exclaimed, "Oh there! Wiwi!"
Day 2, less accidents. What I want is for her to just indicate she needs to pee. That's the turning point!

What Are Maddy's Favorite Books?
0-6 months Nothing really, high contrast books and books that are more of for me to read out loud to her
7-12 months She loves flap books or peak-a-boo books, like those of Rod Campbell's and Where's Spot books. In fact, for the longest time, super favorite nya Dear Zoo and Where's Spot by Eric Hill! Paulit ulit! Also texture books.
1-1.5 Sound books, books with songs, Incy Wincy Spider. Books where you can help her identify objects or pictures. Essentially one shoe in the more academic side now.
1.6-2 years old A lot of Sandra Boyntons, A Very Hungry Caterpillar! Story books with more pictures than words. Shorter stories like Peppa Pig
Now she's beginning to appreciate books with longer stories, like Goldilocks, Little Red Riding Hood, 3 Billy Goats, fairy tales, Little Golden Books, Berenstein Bears! She likes stories now rather than just identifying pictures.

Nolan at 3 Months Old
Fourth Trimester - DONE! I'm over the worse of the sleepless nights and adjustment period, I've been back at work for a month already, and I'm proud of the progress I've made post-partum compared to the time when I just gave birth to Amadine.
1. I've been hitting 5kms weekly, and trying to hit more for my long runs on Sundays. I've been swimming twice a week, and just recently been keeping it at 1200m mileage every session. My abs are returning too, as long as I keep up with my no/minimal rice intake!
2. Nolan is more awake and longer too. He'll usually nap for a while after his morning bath, and be up for 2-3 hours, then nap again. He'll go to "sleep" around 9/9.30pm, which gives me time to hang out with Maddy (while she watches Paw Patrol) until her bedtime of 10:30pm.
3. Nolan is up by 6:30am or so, at which point I hand him to Yaya Jean while I work out or while I take another hour of sleep.
4. He's discovered his hand/thumb to his great delight, and will.not.stop. sucking on an entire fist! I have to keep reminding the helpers to move his hand away from his mouth.
5. He's also moved up to Pampers Medium already. MYGAD. I've started fitting him into the 3-6mos old onesies actually when he was just 2.5 months old.
6. Maddy's been taking Art Classes with Hannah Florendo every Wednesday at 10am, which she semi likes, Swim Classes with Teacher Ellen TTH, which she doesn't like so much, and Ballet Classes at Turning Point Montebello every Wednesday and Thursday 3pm, which she loves.
7. I feel guilty that I don't take Nolan out as much as I probably did with Maddy at the same age. It's just such a big production when we do! That's two yayas, two strollers, two diaper bags. DIBA?! It was easier to plop down anywhere and breastfeed when Maddy needed, but now with Maddy as a toddler, it's harder to just sit and feed shoti and make Maddy wait.

8. It is entertaining to see Maddy really owning it as a big sister. She's so bossy and she loves being bossy. She's so dedicated to doing things herself now (putting on her socks, shoes, handing me a towel, pushing the co sleeper inside the room) and to ordering shoti around. I tell her to make sure shoti doesns't suck on his fist, and then I'd regularly hear her go, "No no no, no hand. Boob only!" But the good thing with this is that she's too busy being bossy to feel jealous. I try not to put her in situations where she'd get jealous. If I wanted to talk to shoti, I'd make sure to talk to him about her, within her earshot.

The Switch To Pigeon Peristaltic Plus
Weeks before I went back to work, we've practiced giving Nolan a bottle here and then already. We've used the same Avent Natural bottles that Maddy used, with new nipples (but still 0+ level). For some reason, when I started working, he hardly touched his bottles! 3 days in, when I got home after a whole day at the office, I was informed he only drank 1.5 oz THE WHOLE DAY. WTF.
That same night Hanley and I went to Ayala so I can get my hands on these Pigeon Peristaltic Plus bottles/nipples that are supposedly also for breastfeeding babies transitioning to bottles.
Next day, he promptly downed 2/3 oz. So it's about the bottle nipples after all?
It's been a few days so far that we've been using these Pigeon nipples, and well he more or less consumes naman the bottles. He doesn't chug the entire contents down like I remember Maddy doing (sometimes kulang pa nga), but he finishes a 3oz bottle in installments over a span of 2-3 hours.
Did you know a brand new Pigeon Peristaltic bottle costs like 570 pesos! And a nipple is around 299! Cray cray expensive, especially since I need about 6-8 bottles on hand, since half are always in the fridge with the pumped milk.
So at least when I have a third kid, ayan may options na sya sa bottles. Sad lang hindi na ROI ang Avent!

6 Week Mark
Nolan finally gets his first vaccination and we had his baptism that same weekend!
I’m down to around 127, so almost 23 pounds lost post partum and less than 10 pounds to go before getting back to pre pregnancy weight!
As soon as I’ve stopped bleeding around 4/5 weeks, I’ve started swimming and running again and doing some core exercises. Werk werk werk’

The start of pumping milk for Nolan
Okay, I couldn't wait til the recommended 6 weeks before starting to pump. Especially since I wasn't exaaaactly going to pump.
I wanted to leave milk already so that I know if Nolan will take it, and so Hanley and I can go out to watch a movie (which was Ready Player One, which I'm not too impressed with anyway. Sayang lang day out ko).
I used the Haakaa hand pump to catch letdown from the other boob when feeding, which was actually pretty effective, except it doesn't really attach well to the boob. I have to keep adjusting it or hold on to it every few minutes. But it did the job of catching the needed milk, which I collected to make 2.5 oz.
Thankfully, less the anxiety of when it was Maddy before, shoti took to the Avent Natural bottle (same as what we used for Maddy) like a pro. He didn't even really choke on it as how Maddy did before.
So now, every day, I try to use the Haakaa at least once to collect milk to make a 2.5oz bottle, so I can go out anytime without worrying.
I'll start pumping and saving for realz maybe a couple of weeks before I return to work, which is ohmygolly in a few more weeks!
In the meantime, miss Drama Queen acting out Maddy has really been moody. And I'm so worried she'll be so used to me at home and ready to play anytime that she won't adjust well when I return to work. Cross fingers everyone.
** Swaddling- yep about that, we just kinda stopped at around 3 weeks. There was no point, it wasn't really working to keep him asleep. Like his achi, he's not that much of a fan of swaddling I guess?

Nolan's First Month!
Hah! I survived (for the second time), the first month with a newborn. I'm thankful I was breastfeeding for a long time before Nolan, so I'm used to not sleeping straight during the night.
1. Sleeptime
Nolan wakes up every hour, hour and a half or at most 2 hours middle of the night to feed/change diaper.
I go to the Nursery room to feed and change him so it won't make so much of a noise for Hanley and Maddy sleeping inside the master's.
I prefer to change him after I feed, because (a) I don't want him to make such a racket crying while I change him when he's hungry; and (b) several times he's pooped after I feed, so at least I get to change him only once if ever.
Most times I put him to sleep right beside me underneath my armpit. For one, he doesn't seem to like it in the co-sleeper at night. Maybe it's the aircon temp, but at 22 degrees, that's the hottest I'll go. I tried to go as high as 23, and it wasn't comfy for me anymore. He doesn't seem to like sleeping on my chest as much as Maddy did, WHICH IS GREAT FOR ME!
Maybe when he gets used to the temp na I can try the co sleeper again.
2. Pajama Onesies or Separates?
ONESIES!
At first I tried separates, hoping it'll be easier to just pull out the bottoms during changing time. But it's really much harder for me and bothersome. And it's harder to check the diaper to see if it needs changing.
So for now, onesies win!
3. Stupid baby acne
Kawawa! As in I can't even bear taking pictures because look! Look at his cheeks! Para syang hormonal teenager grabe.
Upon the advice of Dr. Glenn, I've purchased Eczakort cream to be put 1-2x a day on the acne. Hope it'll go away by his baptism on April 29.
4. How's Maddy, you ask?
She is friendlier with shoti, I don't think she sees him so much as a threat anymore.
BUT there was a time a week or so ago, she got a fever overnight lang naman. She was so cranky. And she'd keep crying at random times or for no reason or for the littlest of things. I think it's part of acting out. She must have mixed emotions inside that she can't really communicate.
In any case, I was advised by friends etc. that it's really better at this point to focus attention on the toddler, since the baby doesn't know any better, and to spend quality time with Maddy. Which I'm trying to do.
5. Ge Lai
Don't even get me started. It does not get easier second time around. Let's just say I had to take a few showers still during ge lai. Di talaga kaya mga beshies. Not when you're running around a toddler pa this time.
6. What do I take?
Well, I've been taking an ounce of Ningxia Red most days. For a time I've been taking the Seravallo wine too but I'm stopping muna in case it's the cause of shoti's acne.
7. Diapers
Started taking Mamy Poko and Pampers NB, but it got a bit expensive especially when we had to change one right after the other all because he kept pooping on a new diaper. So Mamy Poko and Pampers alternately at night, then EQ and SuperTwins alternately during the day!

What to expect at 3 weeks post partum
- finally vaginal bloody discharge significantly lessens, I should be able to use pantyliners in a couple of more days
- shoti hitting maybe 1.5 hrs stretches of sleep (at night), always longer if during the day
- my body’s readjusted so I don’t feel as much of a zombie anymore as the first couple of weeks
- shoti’s baby acne started appearing!
- excited to try pumping soon so I can go out for a movie...

Hubby the duathlete (who would have thought!)
Out of the blue one day, after seeing a bike with an Ironman 70.3 tag on a car in front of him, he decided to get into biking.
He got all the nice stuff (unlike me who got all the cheapest things before, second hand bike and all haha), and started biking! He only spent like a couple of days or a week biking around the parking lot downstairs before being brave enough to venture down and up from our place!!! Galing!
He's lost more than 20 pounds since then, which was August 2017, and he's been so encouraged that he got LC to make training plans for him for a duathlon last Feb!

(a bit chubby pa here)
(so proud of this guy! He's even done a 100km ride, and the longest I've ever done was like 60km hahaha)
(such a strong runner now who can do like a 30-min 5k WITH EASE!)
(he does some long rides with the Omega Tri Team)
(o diba ganda ng bday cake for him!)
Finally weaning Maddy off Chuckie as well
Hahaha so when we weaned Maddy off from Dutch Mill, we thought okay we can introduce like a chocolate milk to compensate. She stuck to Chuckie and at first she'd only ask for it once or twice a day... then eventually it got as bad as her Dutch Mill days where she'd ask for it when she wakes up, before a meal, before a nap, before sleeping..
So when Dr. Glenn heard about it last week, he really told us to take her off it.
Lucky for us she's at that age, as mentioned, where she already really understands how things work. We told her she can't have Chuckie anymore as it would blacken her teeth, and because Dr. Glenn said it makes her poop hard and ouchie, after a couple of days, she was fine without it. She would cry at first when she asked for it and we had to tell her we had none (although we had like a shitload secured in a higher cabinet). But now she's fine.
And now - buyag - and hopefully it continues - she's displayed better appetite.
Hope Maddy gains healthy weight!!!

Week 1 with Nolan and how Maddy's been taking it
So when we brought Nolan home on the Wednesday, Maddy was a bit reserved seeing him. And kept saying no no no several times. But I wouldn't call her aggressive, hostile, and she also didn't get hysterical. She just didn't really want his presence.
But it's been a week and a half so far and I think she's adjusted vastly. She acknowledges him now and even points out when his swaddle becomes undone. She touches his head and his feet or caresses them saying "cute!"
What I do is try to make shoti the bad guy hahahaha, like I'll say within her earshot:
"Buti ka pa Achi Maddy, you don't poop in your diaper anymore!"
"Shoti noh always crying! Buti ka pa you don't!"
"Look at Achi Maddy drinking her milk properly from a cup, ikaw shoti still at the boob!"
"Achi Maddy is so nice and well behaved o, Shoti is crying all the time"
Sleeping arrangement is a bit tough. Maddy of course remains to sleep in between Hanley and I, leaving shoti to sleep in the Arm's Reach co-sleeper...except that he only likes sleeping there during the day! At night, he doesn't seem to be used to the aircon or the dark, and the only way he'd sleep soundly - and therefore I'd sleep soundly - is if he was on my chest.
So for a week now or so, sleeping is erratic as follows:
12-1:30am SLEEP with shoti on chest
1:30-2am shoti stirs up, feeds him, change diaper (all in the outside room, so Hanley and Maddy don't wake up)
2-3:30am SLEEP with shoti on chest
3:30am-4:30am feeds him, change diaper
4:30am-6:30am or so SLEEP with shoti on chest
6:30am pass him off to Yaya Jean for sunlight, and I get to sleep for another hour or so
7:30am/8am shoti will cry for milk and I bolt up from the bed to go out of the room before his crying wakes up Hanley or Maddy
It was a bit disorienting at first but I've adjusted since then and as long as I get at least one afternoon nap in, even for at least 1 hour, then that supplements the broken evening sleep sufficiently. I just try to get an aggregate of 7-8 hours of sleep in a 24-hour window.

Welcome Don Nolan Wong!!!
I gave birth to Don Nolan Wong on a Monday, March 12, 2018 at 7.29pm.
1. The week before.
Dra. Chona told me a week before that I was already 2-3cm dilated and can expect to give birth in a week or so. She actually gave me admitting orders already just in case! I was 36 weeks and a day by then.
She didn't advise naman that I take it easy. So I found myself working out and swimming pa that week.
2. March 12, 2018
I was ready with my bag when I saw Dra. Chona that Monday. The last pregnancy, she didn't let me go home anymore after one regular check up. So knowing Dra. Chona, I had a feeling she was going to ask me to be admitted after IE that day, and she did! She said I was 3-4cm dilated.
Hanley left work early and I was waiting for him at Bo's Coffee below the clinic. We went to the hospital across around 2pm. I was asked to go to the Labor Room, while Hanley waited somewhere. What I recall was being given Oxytocin around 4pm, experiencing minor manageable but regular contractions after that. Around 6:30pm I think Dra. Chona came in, broke my water. I remember experiencing stronger contractions until I was eventually wheeled into the delivery room.
Shoti Nolan came out a big bigger than Maddy, longer too, and apparently on a short coil! So his shoulder actually got stuck daw down there and they had to do a maneuver pushing him and his legs back in before pulling him out again.
3. So year, he came out...yet again with another baby..purple.
But people have been saying he looks more like me now! So yay!

Update on Maddy's constipation issue - a bit of an improvement
So sometime end of December 2017, when we're at our wits with Maddy's constipation issues, pedia recommended why don't we finally just remove Dutch Mill from her life. This yogurt drink, of which Maddy consumes in 4-5 tetrapaks in a day, is the only thing that we haven't really changed from her diet or lifestyle.
So after our Hong Kong trip, after trying and successfully getting her to drink Pediasure formula milk (more of as a midnight, pre-bedtime snack), we removed DM from the equation.
[Side note re the Pediasure, so it started out that we'd make a bit of a game out of drinking the milk. I made sure to involve her in the mixing of her own milk, and I'd drink milk together with her, which was my Diabetasol at that time. I needed to drink a glass before bedtime, so sakto that I could make my milk together with her. She got used to it that until now, or almost more than a month already, we'd be mixing milk every night before sleeping. She used to take only 1-2oz...last night, she drank a whopping 3oz followed by another 2oz! High five everyone!]
I removed DM simply by telling her than I couldn't give it to her anymore, because the doctor said that it wasn't good for her tummy and that it doesn't help her poop. I have no idea if she understood me. But I've always been a stickler for just coming clean and telling her the truth about things. SURPRINGLY [KNOCK 1000x on WOOD], she took like a champ. She didn't ask for it so much anymore, but readily accepted the Chuckie chocolate drink and other chocolate milk tetrapaks I offered in exchange. [Although now she seems to be fixated on Chuckie, but whatever right, it's milk. That's another problem for another time.]
So anyway, at the same time as giving her Chuckie, which she asks for 2-3x a day, and her Pediasure, we also started giving her Lactulose again 2-3x a day, 5ml each time/1 teaspoon.
SO FAR, she's been pooping every 2-3 days. At first the pooping would be uncontrollable. She pooped in her diaper after so long of pooping only in the toilet [because of the suppositories we put in]. But now she's able to tell us beforehand that she needs to poop, and we take her to the toilet.
For both our house and in laws, we've been using this potty trainer below.
Doctor recommends that it needs to be a potty trainer where she can plant both of her feet down.
Let's hope she gets used to pooping and we can slowly cut down Lactulose.

Maddy's singular trait of being obsessive
Hanley and I have come to the conclusion that compared to other kids, Maddy has a tendency to fixate obsessively on things.
It started to be obvious with the iPad. Before we weaned her off it, she would be obsessed with the iPad, to the point that her behavior just got really ugly. Yet other kids on iPads or exposed to phones, YouTube or Netflix don't really have the same issues.
Then small other things like watching Barbie Mermaid on Netflix. It started out before as just a weekend thing, then she started wanting to watch it every day. Then recently she'd make a scene and throw a tantrum at 11pm asking to watch Barbie Mermaid, refusing to sleep!!! you know how I managed to put her to sleep that one night at 12midnight she was still crying? I had to carry her, sway her in the dark, with her sobbing, while I recounted THE ENTIRE MOVIE aka storytelling the whole movie until she fell asleep.
Then with her Dutch Milk also before, she refused to try other new drinks. We just weaned her off DM, so now she's on Chuckie chocolate milk, and she refuses again to try other drinks.
Nakakaloka. Obsessive kid. Hanley said seems to take after him, since he has a tendency to obsess as well, like over certain watch brands, material items. He's the type to buy six pairs of shoes from the same brand or model one after the other if he's really into it. Now it's shades and bike stuff.

Beating coughs and colds when pregnant
Since I can't take or I'm hesitant to take conventional medicine (Neozep, oregano leaves, anything with phenylephrine etc) for my cough and cold, so far the following have been tried and tested (and I'm amazed):
As soon as my sore throat starts, I begin with Camillosan throat spray, hot tea with lemon/ginger/cayenne/Manuka Honey.
As soon as the runny nose starts, followed by post nasal drip cough, I take:
- Still hot tea with lemon/ginger/cayenne/Manuka Honey
- gargle with water with salt
- Nasal spray, continually
- Sinupret 3x a day
- diffusing RC+lemon or RC+lavender at night
I'm not saying I got well overnight, but by the 3rd or 4th day the symptoms have significantly eased, especially the congestion and post nasal drip coughing.
Essential Oils for non pregnant
For Hanley and yaya, who've started exhibiting the same cold symptoms, immediately I gave them hot tea with honey and 1 drop of Thieves, 2x a day. For yaya, symptoms disappeared in 2-3 days. Hanley's? Overnight!
